Soaker hoses are fibrous hoses, kind of like a wire strainer, that allow water to seep out along the entire length. They are primarily made of ground up, recycled automobile tires. These usually work best when gardening with the traditional row method.

Lay a soaker hose about 3 to 4 inches from the base of the plants. You can bury them in mulch and leave them in the garden until the end of the growing season. Lay all or part of one soaker hose in each row of your garden, then wind it around to the next row, space and length permitting. For installing multiple soaker hoses, use a hose coupler that allows you to attach two soaker hoses to the spigot.

Drip irrigation tapes are essentially flat garden hoses with a series of holes all along their length. If you get the kind that are pressure-compensating, you won’t need to install a flow regulator at the spigot. Without either of these, the water pressure can cause the hose to burst before the water reaches the end of the hose. Use drip irrigation tapes in the same manner as soaker hoses: place alongside the row of vegetables just a couple of inches from the base of the plants.

Drip emitter systems are water outlet heads which are connected to feeder hoses underground. They basically act like an underground sprinkler. The water seeps out of the emitter outlet head at a slow rate and saturates the soil.

Drip emitter feeder lines are installed by driving a flat spade into the soil, wiggling it back and forth and laying the feeder line into the resulting “trench.” The water emitter head is then attached to one end of the feeder hose. The other end of the feeder hose is attached to the main line coming from the spigot. The feeder hose is then buried in the trench simply by stepping on the soil or sod with your foot.

Each emitter waters an area of several square feet; this distance varies with the manufacturer of the irrigation system. They are available as kits, as well as ala carte. You can leave these in the ground all year round. This type of irrigation system is best for intensive vegetable gardens, annual or perennial flower gardens, trees and shrubs.

Soil-borne disease organisms can be splashed onto the leaves of the plants when using sprinklers. Irrigation systems reduce the possibility of pests and diseases attacking garden vegetables because they deliver water directly to the roots.

Basically, hydroponic gardening is about controlling the environment where the plants or crops are grown, without using soil to boot. You do however have to use some nutrients and water.

Many commercial agricultural operations are now based on hydroponic concepts as it produces higher yields, more nutritious yields and over the long term is often cheaper to produce than using traditional methods. For instance there are some big agricultural players in Brazil who now use hydroponic methods to grow strawberries, and they swear by the concept. Further, some others are gradually switching to hydroponic growing methods by adopting a semi-hydroponic system, which is a bit of a half-way house between traditional farming methods and hydroponics.

You can buy hydroponic starting kits for as little as a few hundred dollars, you can go much higher if you want all the bells and whistles. Or you can just buy the basic equipment needed and make your own (the latter can be done for less than 50 dollars). 

Nowadays you don’t have to venture very far to buy or purchase the equipment necessary to start growing hydroponically as many good hardware stores will sell the basic systems and almost certainly stock the items needed to make your own system.

Of course you will need to learn the basics too, and the best way to do this is by reading a basic hydroponic guide, there are many available, often cheap too (around 30 or so dollars).

But this isn’t something out of Kafka, oh, no! It’s the reality of modern gardening.

Growing produce the hydroponic way is not only easy, but super convenient, a lot less effort than traditional methods and anyone can do it and you can start anytime you like.

The first thing you need to do is allocate some indoor space, even a spare room. You then either purchase an off the shelf hydroponic kit or make it yourself. The route you decide upon doesn’t really matter, although will most probably be decided by how much you have to spend.

Next up is to decide if you want the basic hydroponic closet or a dandy model with bells and whistles, buy the seeds or seedlings and your all set. Oh, one more thing, if you’re a novice I recommend a good guide to hydroponics book.

I must issue a friendly word of warning though, hydroponic gardening is quite addictive and as soon as you get into it, start picking and eating your produce you will want to increase your yield capacity.

Anyways, perhaps you can always move into the garden, eh? And keep your house for hydroponics – Now that would be Kafkaesque.

Not every type of hydroponics system lends itself well to homemade design. For systems that use drip or spray heads, you have many costly items to purchase before you can produce a properly working system. Usually, you end up learning a lot from your first failed attemp if you choose to build your own drip system or aeroponics system. There is one easy and relatively inexpensive homemade hydroponics system I have found. It is the homemade ebb and flow.

For a homemade hydroponics ebb and flow system, you will need two cheap plastic storage totes, an aquarium air pump, an aquarium water pump, a timer, a set of flood and drain fittings, and a short length of plastic tubing. If you are not sure what flood and drain fittings are, go to Google, click on “images”, and do a quick search for “flood and drain fittings”.

First, one tote will be your nutrient reservoir. Pick a dark color tote to keep light out of the nutrient solution…this will help prevent the growth of algae. The air pump should go to a couple of air stones, which will be kept bubbling in the nutrient reservoir. The water pump goes here as well. Your water pump should be able to move at least 100 gallons/hour at a height of 3 feet. The pump should cost you about 30 dollars.

The other tote will go on top of the nutrient reservoir and hold the plant containers. Plant containers should be filled with expanded clay pellets or something equal, like lecca stone or lava chips. Somewhere in the bottom of this container (out of the way of the plants) you will drill two 3/4 inch holes and install the flood and drain fitting in one, and the overflow fitting in the other.

Finish it off by running a short piece of tubing from the water pump to the flood and drain fitting (which is the shorter of the two).

All you have left to do is plug the water pump into the timer, set your timer for your flood and drain cycle, and fill the nutrient reservoir with ten gallons of solution. Flood your plant container for a 1/2 hour 4 times a day while the lights are on.

When the pump kicks on, the top container will fill with water (but never higher than the overflow). It takes a while for the clay pellets to really absorb the nutrient solution. When the pump kicks off, the nutrient solution will drain back down the shorter fitting, leaving the plant roots and the clay pellets wet with nutrient solution.

The flood and drain system is the homemade hydroponics system I use most often. The function of the system is simple. The results are consistently very good. The system is so easy to put together.

Before you get started…your systme is only one piece of the indoor gardening puzzle. You must have control over the environment you place your garden into, and this environment must be to the plants liking. In addition, you will have a much better chance at success once you learn the exact nutrient requirements (and therefore the exact feeding) of your plants at every stage of their development. In order to meet these feeding requirements, you must learn how to properly maintain nutrient sollution in a reservoir. Learn these things and you are sure to have a hydro-greenthumb.
